Seating Challenges

Seating for Bariatric Residents

Providing seating for bariatric residents presents many unique challenges. Broda chairs help solve many issues related to bariatric care:

Seating Dimensions: Broda can customize the seat widths on most of our chairs to 22”, 24”, 26” and 28”. It is important to consider the seat depth needed for a bariatric resident. The gluteal shelf may cause the resident to sit further towards the front of the seat, thus needing extra seat depth. Broda can customize the seat depth in the factory or after factory to 18.5” and 20.” (17” is standard) For other depths, contact Broda.

Safe Patient Handling: Safe patient handling is essential for both patient and caregiver and can be more challenging when dealing with additional weight of bariatric residents. Broda chairs offer infinitely adjustable tilt and recline to help position the resident safely and easily. For bariatric widths, we use additional gas springs to help ease the lifting force required of caregivers. The tilt angle helps to accommodate the use of many mechanical lifts. Additionally, to accommodate side and/or bed transfers, Broda offers removable arms and wings for a smooth transfer.

Strength/Durability: It is important to provide durable seating that will stand the test. Durable seating helps ensure safety for both resident and caregiver. Broda chairs are known for their durability. Our frame is made of 16 gauge tubular steel with a 3 year warranty. The casters enable many of our chairs to hold up to at least 660 lbs.

Comfort: For bariatric residents, often their comfort is often determined by how safe they feel in their chair. Our infinitely adjustable tilt and recline allows for various positioning options, and helps keep the resident cradled safely in the chair. Pressure redistribution is also essential. Our Comfort Tension Seating™ helps redistribute pressure and offers heat and moisture exchange for long term comfort and pressure sore prevention.
